Q: How can membership assist my daughter in succeeding academically?
A: Her academic success is important to Alpha Delta Pi. We have a specific grade requirement in order for a new member to be initiated into our chapter and we have a minimum GPA to reach to remain a member in good academic standing. During their first semester, new members are encouraged to attend study halls and seek assistance from tutors both inside and outside the chapter. We also have a study program to help new and current members transition from high school to college. Recognition for excellent grades is also provided by our chapter through positive incentives. Two Greek Honorary Societies - Order of Omega and Gamma Sigma Alpha - are in place at UNT to recognize academic excellence, leadership and giving back to the community.
Q: What are the benefits of membership in a sorority?
A: We believe there are 5 major reasons:
Leadership - Sororities provide many opportunities for women to gain leadership skills. Greek-letter organizations are essentially self-governing communities, and new members have the opportunity to serve on a number of committees within the chapter.
Community Service - Each semester, Greek members participate in a wide variety of community service projects. Many of these projects are guided by the national philanthropies of each individual organization or by the university governing councils.
Integrity - All sororities are based upon values, ethics and standards. Individually, the organizations hold their members accountable for their own actions and behaviors.
Diversity - Membership in the Greek community allows for the opportunity to interact with people from the many different walks of life.
Networking - Greek alumni organizations can provide your daughter with a strong system of support after college. Many chapters provide connections within the community through jobs and internships. This networking opens doors to students for post-college opportunities all around the nation and even the world.
Q: My daughter will make friends in the residence halls and in classes. What would be different about sorority friends?
A: Membership in a sorority is a living and learning experience for women with shared values. Chapter members develop a special bond of sisterhood. These friendships last beyond the college years and are supported by alumnae activities and networking programs that provide opportunities for continued camaraderie, service and personal development.
Q: What is the cost of membership?
A: Cost of the sororities on UNT's campus vary, but are all about the same. Typically, the first semester is more costly for incoming members, as some one-time fees apply such as new member and initiation fees. Our house is available for members to live in, and our costs are competitive with campus options. We also offer payment plans to assist with the financial obligation of membership.
Q: What about the use of alcohol and controlled substances, irresponsible behavior and hazing?
A: Every sorority at UNT expects its members to obey all local, state and federal laws and to follow all their own policies and standards. Most organizations allocate significant resources to educate its members about alcohol and substance abuse. Furthermore - our chapter funds will never be used to purchase alcohol, and the illegal use and abuse of alcohol and controlled substances are not tolerated. Hazing is against the law, and all national fraternities and sororities prohibit hazing in any form.
